We made the mistake of going with someone else once and regretted it immediately. (Family member raved about another company which is why we gave it a try. Terrible mistake)

I am disappointed with the cleaning service for several reasons:
1. While it's understandable that items need to be moved during cleaning, they were never put back in their original places afterward.
2. When making the bed, they placed my comforter on the ground, which is unacceptable as it made it dirty. This is not the level of care I expected.
3. I specifically ordered garage cleaning, but this was not done at all.
Overall, the service did not meet my expectations.
I've hired several different housecleaners since I moved to San Jose, and Alfs is the only one I've decided to have back. They're quick (probably due to sending 3-person teams instead of less), communicate clearly in English, and do an excellent job. They've managed to get stains out that other cleaners have left behind (or made!), and I've never had to ask them to go back and clean a thing that they skipped the first time around. They also have good availability - unlike with many other highly-rated housecleaners on Yelp, I've never had trouble getting an appointment.
I had initially booked Alf's because they had good online reviews and had a clean user friendly website. But after regularly using their service consistently 5+ sessions, we ultimately decided to move on due to the sheer number of quality of issues we ran into and the non transparent pricing/service that left a bad taste in our mouth. While the communication of the owner was prompt and responsive, I did not like having to monitor the cleaning service every time and then have to email the owner regularly to address issues that came up during the service, only to find that many times it wasn't addressed.
Examples of poor cleaning quality
- My meditation cards by the window sill was soaked from the cleaning and ended up being soaked and stuck on the window sill. I still cannot remove it. My medication cards are also ruined and clumped together. They didn't think to move it after subsequent cleans either.
- Bathtub and drawer nobs were dislodged by the cleaning and not put back. They made no attempt to put it back after returning again and again.
- Found bits of blood on one of my pillow cases likely from a cut finger. I did not report this as I feel bad for the cleaner, but had to rewash the pillow case.
- Clothes were frequently piled together in one spot and not put away or organized.
- Dishes were often not properly washed alone with forks and other utensils and had to be redone. This happened frequently.
- Cleaners would not check-in on finished work. This was only done in the first 1-2 sessions and non subsequently. They just left when they were done.
Example of non transparent service/pricing on "extras" like dishwashing and fridge cleaning
- Booked for fridge clean extra on 3 separate occasions and was told day of that it could not be executed. First time, cleaner said they did not have time. This was a surprise as the payment went through online. Second time, cleaners said the food must be removed from the fridge. This was not stipulated one line, so away the clean was not executed. Third time, said they charge extra to move food from fridge and won't put food back into fridge. Upon talking to the owner, it turns out, the price only includes fridge cleaning when the fridge is empty. Service also does not include putting food items back in the fridge. Each and every time the cleaners told me they would talk to the owner, but I had to followup to make sure the refund was being executed.
- Paid for dish washing extra and only saw dishes piled into the dish washer. Non dish washable dishes were filed in and many dishes had to be re-washed. My understanding was that all dishes would be hand washed
- When a different cleaning team came they hand washed the dishes, but piled everything on the counter. They fixed this when I pointed it out, but when I added this as a note for next time, the owner pointed out dish washing does not include putting dishes in the cabinets. Again not clearly stipulated on the webiste. It only takes 5 min max to put them away in the cabinet. Feels like stipulations upon stipulations. I'm tired of finding these restrictions out so late into working relationship and then have to deal with it.
While we would have liked to find a reliable cleaning service to tide over some big changes in our lives, these poor experiences built up over time and made a long term clean with this service more trouble than it's worth.
